John C Campbell Folk School Winter Dance Week
Join us for a retrospective Winter Dance Week New Year's Eve celebrations at the John C. Campbell Folk School.
The evening will open with a talk by Bob Dalsemer about the tradition of NYE at JCCFS. That will be followed by videos of past NYE performances of JCCFS ritual dance teams, including Garland, Rapper, Clog-Morris and Northwest Border Morris, with narration and history by their dance leaders.
After taking a break for snacks and singing in lower Keith House, we'll watch a recording of Bob Dalsemer leading two singing squares, and then count down to midnight for the traditional balloon drop and the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
Speaking of the balloon drop, we'll take you on a video tour up to the top-secret trap-door room where the balloons are released, a place that very few people have been privileged to visit.
After the virtual midnight, you'll get to experience the Brasstown Brigade, as they fire their muskets and cannon to ward away evil spirits.
And finally, we'll finish with a short video clip of the famous Possum Drop.
The entire presentation lasts about and hour and a half.

Terpsichore's Holiday: Celebrating Our Community
Terpsichore's Holiday (usually held 12/27- 1/1) brings together folk traditions of dance, art, and music into a week-long community. It's a time to get away at the end of the year and try a new instrument, sing a few songs, create an art project, and advance your musicianship.
All virtual for 2020, we're joining NYE Sea to Sea for our final session of the week. We'll dance in the new year with our favorite traditions, a variety of dances including: The Salty Dog Rag, Edelweiss, Sellinger's Round, waltzes, a square, a contra, and an English Country Dance. Then we'll sing in the new year with a couple of cherished rounds.
